From Rorate Caeli: Cardinal Bertone Confirms Motu Proprio; USCCB Expects It Soon
Rorate Caeli reports that in an interview for the cover story (pages 56-60) of Le Figaro Magazine (weekly magazine of the French national daily Le Figaro), published today (not yet available on the newspaper's website), Cardinal Bertone has confirmed that the impending motu proprio allowing for the wider use of the Missal published in 1962 by Pope John XXIII, with its own calendar will be published.
Here's the story: Breaking news: Bertone confirms motu proprio
Here's the quote:
Is a Decree widening the possibility of celebrating the Latin Mass according to the rite from before Vatican II (the so-called Mass of Saint Pius V) still expected?[Secretary of State] Cardinal Bertone: The merit of the conciliar liturgical reform is intact. But both [for reasons of] not losing the great liturgical heritage left by Saint Pius V and for granting the wish of those faithful who desire to attend Masses according to this rite, within the framework of the Missal published in 1962 by Pope John XXIII, with its own calendar, there is no valid reason not to grant to every priest in the world* the right to celebrate according to this form. The authorization of the Supreme Pontiff would evidently preserve the validity of the rite of Paul VI. The publication of the motu proprio which specifies this authorisation will take place, but it will be the pope himself who will explain his motivations and the framework of his decision. The Sovereign Pontiff will personally explain his vision for the use of the ancient Missal to the Christian people, and particularly to the Bishops.
The USCCB has also confirmed that the motu proprio is expected soon: Tridentine Mass: Pope looks for bridge to tradition
Any thoughts?

The Pope is taking the lead even against those like Bertone, who seems a bit dismayed
He is a leader in a real quagmire, knowing that the past 40 years have been questionable and with the current crop of Bishops and Cardinals so entrenched in Modernism, he is trying to keep them in line but he knows both with his background in theology and possibly through the holy spirit the utter disdain those within the hierarchy of the church have for sacred tradition and the deposit of faith which no one, even the pope can altar-is being done so daily by Bishops who in the "spirit of vatican II" do as they please
I am doubtful that the MP will mean much, but it is another small step back towards sanity
God bless his efforts and health as I fear who may take this mans place

It all depends on whether the TLM is really liberated or not. If the TLM is given free rein, and modernist bishops are no longer able to block it, then it will mean alot (in time).

It will mean alot when the laity migrates to a reverent Liturgy, when it is made available to them. Supply and demand.

The MP will at least give those fighting "Bishop Tod" and the malevolent Mahoney something they can point to in their fight to force those reprobate heterodox bishops to accept the Roman rite beign celebrated in their diocese. No more second class citizen - but full participants.

Though a small step, it is one in the right direction. Lets see if our bishops know how to obey.

Long Live our Holy Father Benedict XVI! For his courage and wisdom. May this turn of events serve as a source of unity for our Church and not continue to divide us.

The reason I do not understand the fuss about the Latin traditional mass is that we have it available here- we even have a church and priestly group dedicated to it and fully supported by the Archbishop. We've had the community for over a decade, and the church dedicated to it since just after 9/11. And there are other parishes that offer the Latin mass in addition to the Novo Ordo mass (St Marys for one, early mass there Tridintine) - Our Lady of Mt Carmel does ONLY the tridentine from what I can recall.

IF you are serious about supporting our priests, you should consider becoming members of the Confraternity of Saint Peter, who support the priests of the FSSP with our daily prayers and rosary.
FSSP's mission?
The mission of the Fraternity is two-fold: first, the formation and sanctification of priests in the cadre of the traditional liturgy of the Roman rite, and secondly, the pastoral deployment of the priests in the service of the Church.
The Fraternity was founded on July 18, 1988 at the Abbey of Hauterive (Switzerland) by a dozen priests and a score of seminarians. Shortly after the Fraternity’s foundation and following upon a request by Cardinal Ratzinger, Bishop Joseph Stimpfle of Augsburg, Germany granted the Fraternity a home in Wigratzbad, a Marian shrine in Bavaria that now lodges the Fraternity’s European seminary. In the same month of October there arrived a handful of priests and some thirty seminarians ready to start "from scratch". There are currently almost 200 priests and 110 seminarians in the Fraternity.
Hmm. some guy named Cardinal Ratzinger supported the formation of a group of priests dedicated to being in back the traditional Latin mass. I wonder where Cardinal Ratzinger went?
So now you know what Pope Benedict's background is.
Go look FSSP up on the web. We are blessed to have several of their priests in our diocese here in Denver. Its a shame Mahoney probably wouldn't let any of them within 100 miles of his bailiwick for fear of bursting into flames.

Is it just me or is anyone else getting tired of these "the check is in the mail" notices? I have been praying NIGHTLY for a restoration of the Tridentine mass and a reunification of the Catholic and Orthodox churches for longer than I can remember. At this point, if the MP DOES come out around Easter, I will actually be pretty surprised. But the rumour mill has been saying it will come out since last year...so not holding my breath anymore. God's will be done.

Amen to that.
It's only a matter of time. I also believe that once the 1962 comes back, you will find Catholics who have stepped away are going to return home. And -that- is something worth thinking about.
My opinion, of course.

The picture says it all. When's the last time we've seen our accompanying priests, altar boys, and presiding priest look like that? I know looks can be deceiving...but disrespectul body language, disinterest, and general shoddiness are probably more indicative of a problem than the other way around.
I wish I had that kind of reverence.

Concerning the Motu proprio and its effects... there is a "bigger picture" to consider here, of which the Motu proprio is only a small part. Sacramentum Caritatis, The Directory of Sacred Music, The revision of Music in Catholic Worship and Liturgical Music today, the re-translation of the Roman Missal... not to mention the appointments of more traditionalist Bishops... the reason for the long delays in the publication of the MP, not to mention Sacramentum Caritatis, is that it is necessary to wait for all of the pieces to be in place so that the "restoration" will be able to work...

This will be the first truly fundamental change for the good in the Church for a long time.
A great many of the serious Catholics will peel off for the Tridentine (and the priests who go with it). Those remaining with the Novus Ordo will start thinking.
It will be easier to distinguish between serious Catholics and unserious ones.

Sir,
On Saturday October 24, 1998 a Latin Mass according to the old rite was celebrated in the totally jam-packed church of Saint Ignazio by Cardinal Alfons Stickler Cardinal Ratzinger's addressed many things...........then he said that "the free space which the Novus Ordo Missae leaves for creativity in the liturgy is, often, excessesively broadened, further he said,"the differences in the liturgy according to the new rite, as it is actually practiced in many places, are often greater than the difference between the new and the old liturgy, when both are celebrated according to the prescribed liturgical books",at the end he further said that in order to have the right to receive the sacraments according to the ritual of 1962 without any obstacles, the Ecclesia Dei commission must be strengthened. Traditionalists may look for judicial solutions, he said, but they must also seek ways to be better understood by their bishops. The bishops can be very closed to the idea of allowing a Latin Mass, and sometimes bishops ABUSE their discretionary power, and do not respect the rights of the faithful,Ratzinger said.
But, he added, these bishops are not persons of ill will:it is the cultural and spiritual situation, a certain kind of education, a certain formation of the sprit, which does not allow them to understand properly the need to open the doors to the celebration of the old rite.( Inside the Vatican/December1998 issue)
Now the time is near future for the Heavenly Liturgy of Mass. Benedict XVI is the new era of TLM.
DEO GRATIAS.
