Birthdate: Dec. 26, 1951.

Age: 58.

Birthplace: Monterrey, Mexico.

Family: Parents deceased. Three older sisters, one younger sister.

Current residence: San Antonio, Texas.

Current positions: Archbishop of San Antonio and newly appointed coadjutor, in line to head the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, the largest archdiocese in the U.S. with 5 million members.

Education: Bachelor's degree in theology from University of Navarre (Rome campus), 1978. Doctorate from University of Navarre (Pamplona, Spain campus), 1980. Also has bachelor's degrees in accounting and philosophy.

Experience: Ordained as a priest of the Opus Dei Prelature in 1978 in Spain. Ordained as an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Denver in 2001. Appointed archbishop of the Diocese of San Antonio in 2004. Named coadjutor to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and successor to Cardinal Roger Mahony on Tuesday. Current chair-elect of the Committee on Migrants and Refugee Services for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

There are 3 good things about this man:
1. He ain't Mahoney
2. He is one of us. In a diocese that is three-quarters Latino, it was inexcusable to have a non-Latino as our "shepherd". We are tired of being second-class citizens, and we deserve a bishop who reflects the diversity of the community.
3.About the only thing Mahoney didn't get wrong was his compassion for undocumented Americans. Bishop Gomez will continue the tradition of fighting for social justice for those who deserve it most.

Further more Gilbert, I love the fact that LA is getting a new Bishop, reading about Archbishop Jose Gomez background and affiliation with Opus Dei I am hopeful for the LA archdiocese; regardless of Bishop Gomez's race.
