Ingatius Insight Scoop posts a link to this May 1995 by James Hitchcock. As Carl Olson puts it:
This article originally appeared in Catholic World Report, May 1995–exactly ten years ago. While much has transpired since then–not the least the election of a new pope–I think this article is well worth revisiting, for reasons that I hope are clear upon reading (or rereading) it in 2005.
Let's pray Pope Benedict XVI makes more headway. Given his emphasis on bishops exercising their authority to actually shepherd their flocks, I think he will.
as i read the article by dr. hitchcock, i couldn't help but remember a comment made by one of the "yammering chowderheads" during the funeral for JPII. wherein he/she voiced the opinion that the diocesan bishops did not appreciate the curia treating them like alter boys.
the first thing that popped into my head was, "well maybe if the diocesan bishops didn't act like alter boys the curia wouldn't treat them as such".
