More Nunsense

It's amazing how discussions about the sad state of non-traditional women religious orders sparks such a response from Catholics (Where Have All The Sisters Gone? is probably the most visited post on this blog). Most of us still remember how "real" nuns looked and behaved -- and sorely miss them. Every time I actually see one or more at Mass, I find myself pointing them out to my family as if it were a Bigfoot sighting: "Look! There's a nun!"

Other than those occasional live sightings, the only other time I see nuns in habits is on television or in the movies. It's instructive that whenever the entertainment industry, with its intuitive grasp of the power of symbols, features nun characters in TV shows or movies, they are nearly always wearing habits. Hollywood knows this is how people, regardless of their religious profession, think nuns ought to look. The only ones who don't get the message are orders like the Adrian Dominican Sisters.

It's instructive that in the eyes of these two veteran New Ager/pagans who converted to Catholicism, these progressive nuns remind them much more of their former lives than their present lives in the Catholic Church.

UPDATE: The always excellent Anchoress has some great links to several traditonal orders of nuns that are attracting young adherents to their ranks. Shocking!

There is another opportunity to see nuns wearing habit: on the propaganda requesting donations for retired priests and religious. If they had been faithful, there would be no need for such campaigns.

There are PLENTY of Traditional Sisters in Post Falls Idaho, and Long Prairie, Minnesota as well. NOTICE....they are ALL TRADS....the novus ordo has so few.....of the novus ordo...it can only be said:

"By their fruits...you'll know them!"

The TRADS have all the REAL Nuns.
