About that "weeds and wheat" parable... Older editions of the Bible refer to the weeds as "tares." This is a name for a type of herb that is so nearly identical to wheat in its appearance while it is growing, that it makes perfect sense not to pull it. It can only be identified at harvest-time, when the wheat has developed its characteristic clusters of grain and the tares have not. ("By their fruits ye shall know them...") But the most critical point to remember, particularly vis-a-vis the issue to which this parable is being applied here, is the fact that tares are POISONOUS! That little fact makes the metaphor that much more appropriate, if you ask me.
