I've been sitting here for fifteen minutes trying to decide where to begin about Ted Kennedy. My problem is I'm trying to be charitable. It seems, like the Incredible Hulk, no one likes me when I get mad. So, here goes.

Ted Kennedy is a huge scumb... No, that's not nice. Ted Kennedy is an unrepented murde.... Not nice either. Let's see...Ted Kennedy is an accomplished politician from a prominent Irish-American family in a state in which being Irish is almost a guarantee to win office.

Take the City of Lawerence, MA. This city is 70-80% Hispanic. Yet, the 26 Irishmen who still live there run the town. This is, of course, exaggeration, but you get the point. And it's not Irish bashing, either. I'm damned proud of my Irish heritage.

These people immigrated to the US, and found, as did many immigrants, "No Irish Need Apply" signs. To someone who knows Mass. today, this seems absurd, but not 100 years ago. So, they joined the police and fire depts., organized, and took the mayors offices and city councils in many Mass cities. Before you could say "begorrah!", they're runnin' the whole bloody state.

And then there's Camelot. The Irish-Catholic boy takes the Presidency, is shot, and before you can say, "Johnny, we hardly knew ye", is virtually canonized. Bobby's shot, and suddenly Ted's carrying the flame.

I'm telling you, in Massachusetts it's an epic story. They Kennedy's become demi-gods, and the rest is history. Now, anything bad happens to a Kennedy, and it's, "That poor family, they've been thru so much." These people can commit crimes and offenses that you or I would see jail time for, and it only adds to the pity people feel for them.

Their grip on the state is formidable. Democrats control about 80% of elected offices in the state. Among their ranks are most state employees and their unions, Teachers unions, cops, firemen, the elderly, and those on welfare. It's been said that in Mass, if everyone who works for the state can get one person to vote his way, that they can elect anyone they want.

People are leaving the state in droves. The only people moving in are students and illegal aliens. Pretty soon the only people living there will be the state and local employees, illegals and welfare recipients. What then?

Ted Kennedy isn't the problem. Ted is a symptom. The Cardinals' stance is some small hope. I wonder, tho, as it was probably a Cardinal who granted Ted his supposed annulment, and his brother his, and John Kerry his.

G.M. Knowles

He is not a candidate for excommunication because he strongly adheres to the separation of Church and state.

That is the first response to your post.

Debating an issue on the merits is a far nobler thing than denigrating people.

Lest before you thrown stones as others who have sinned you best examine your own sins.

In addition your headline is misleading nearing dishonesty.

Kennedy did not call the Cardinals bigots. The only way it gets away from dishonesty is that you linked to the actual article with the direct quote.

Why you would need to bring Chappaquiddick into this baffles me.

Denigrating another man's sins instead of a clear argument has no place in Catholic charity.

Another form of argumentation that is not becoming is drawing references for one argument based on the reference of another.

Kevin in Dallas

I just lost my appetite for dinner. Thanks.

Trapped in Brooklyn

My eyes are burning! My eyes are burning! Big, fat drunkard make baby Jesus cry!

john chrysostom

Perhaps Chappaquiddick was mentioned because it was the first of many signs that Ted Kennedy needs our prayers, because he seems to care more about political power than keeping the commandments of God, following the teachings or the Church Christ founded, or the value of human life!

john chrysostom

By the way, advocacy for the separation of Church and state (words which are not found in the U.S. Constitution, by the way) in no way protects Ted Kennedy from excommunication.

Political cronyism and weak kneed prelates are more likely reasons for the failure to excommunicate Ted Kennedy and other so-called "Catholic" pro-abortion politicians.

fedup

Ted Kennedy. Hmmmmmm. The following has been noted concerning Senator Kennedy: "got kicked out of Harvard for cheating . . . United States senator who got drunk, drove a young female campaign worker to her death, then chose not report it to authorities until the next day, and then, only after calling his lawyer, concocting an alibi and developing a strategy to contain the political fallout." I would also add that there have been reports that Ms. Kopechne may have been alive (for an extended period of time) when the good senator abandoned her in the submerged vehicle. Senator Kennedy is also all for wind power, unless you're going to put the @*#! things near Nantucket. As near as I can tell, Ted Kennedy is a Catholic because, in the United States, you can be a Catholic even if you do not actually believe in the doctrine of the Church. Gosh, come to think of it, you can even be a bishop (or a priest) in California, or elsewhere, even if you do not believe in the doctrine of the Church. In short, let's just say that Sen. Kennedy lacks moral standing.

JMC

Actually, as I understand it, anyone who actively promotes abortion, or directly or indirectly aids anyone in getting one, is automatically excommunicated, without any need for an "official" declaration. If priests are still giving him Communion---well, at this point, it's between them and God. All we can do is pray for them.

G.M. Knowles

If Ted Kennedy promoted abortion that would be true. He does not promote abortion nor encourage it.

Mark this...

I am not defending Ted Kennedy's moral life, nor am I defending abortion rights. Most importantly I am not judging Kennedy's spiritual condition.

What I am defending is Gospels of Christ, and correct argumentation.

We cannot judge peoples moral lives. Then we are playing God.

If we wish to promote heterosexual marriage or the sanctity of life we need to do it in a Catholic manner and with good judgement.

If we do it by character assassination we are hurting our own causes.

More importantly we endanger our own souls. "Judge not, and you shall not be judged."

"..and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us."

A denial of these basics are as much a moral defect as Kennedy's may have been.

G.M. Knowles

btw, Senator Kennedy may wish to look at how it is possible Catholic Charities of Boston could have found itself in conflict with the state as an partial cause of the charities decision to halt many of it's adoption services.

Tempted to the right - gay marriage

James

Nonsense, Knowles. By their fruit you will know them. Please, stop the glib, "don't be judgmental" stuff. I'm not giving the green light to detraction and the like, but we must know that doing what he does endangers/imperils him and anyone else who does what he does. As a public official, he is open to closer scrutiny in a way a private individual is not. His scandalous example leads others to sin, and deserves unreserved condemnation. If you've forgotten this, reread John the Baptist, who wasn't too sympathetic and non-judgemental toward Herod. ...if only a church official would do it as openly as Teddy is, then we wouldn't have to.

 Mark

What a load of liberal crap! We can and should judge behavior G.M. Knowles. We cannot judge souls! The whole world is in the mess it is in because of people really want no moral accountability. I think that Mary Jo Kopekne would tell you to go jump in the Chappaquidick!

Billy D

Seems like someone once said something about serving two masters. While Mr. Kennedy appears to attempt to serve both, obviously he cannot, and it's quite obvious which he'll truly serve.
And that's fine, that's his choice to make. But since he has chosen it, he needs to stop claiming to still be serving the other.
You cannot do both, ever.

G.M. Knowles

I really don't equate myself with John the Baptist, so I will not take on that role, either.

Liberal...ummm

That's a first.

As a Catholic, I know this..

The place for judgment and forgiveness is in the confessional and at the foot of God. The only authority on forgiveness I am aware of "as a Catholic" is Jesus Christ.

In the political arena, any of you may be right. Judgment may be exclusively assigned to the authority of conservatives and forgiveness "crap" may be exclusively the authority of the liberals.

I don't know, as I do not embrace either political label.

As to why the world is a mess. My theory is that each is trying to play God.

Genesis "You shall be like Gods."

Rich

I'm surprised that Big Ted has even paid attention to comments and teachings of the bishops.

James

Indulge my crassness, but it looks like Ted may have eaten some of the bishops.

 Kelly

Yes James and a couple of Cardinals for dessert!

Pius V

Wow! Why do the population control proponents feel they need abortion when we have pictures of big Ted topless and braless? Give every human a copy of that picture and you could completely depopulate the planet in a single generation!

Russell Neglia

Why the Church remains silent in the face of supposed Catholic politicians such as Ted Kennedy, John Kerry and Patrick Leahy who support every perversion known to man such as partial birth abortion, homosexuality and moral relativism is beyond me. This silence is an abdication of the Church's role as a moral leader. In this arena it has totally failed and this failure is tragic and a betrayal.

side door Tommy

This fool is the Devil incarnate. And as The Prince of Darkness he naturally would loathe the clergy. He is what is wrong with politics. He is also proof that the good die young.

The church also goes out of its' way to encourage illegal immigration, which puts it in agreement with Ted.
