James Rich

I wondered if anyone has any comment on what I saw last night. I was watching Red Eye (a Fox News late-night show) because I saw Ann Coulter sitting there, and there was a priest there as well. (He is a regular guest on the network, often reporting from Rome. Father Michael may be his name.) His presence caused me to watch longer than I normally would, though in all honesty I don't think I should watch it.

Red Eye can be a bit crass at times, although I noticed a slight improvement while the priest was around; still, however, a number of innuendoes were said in front of him. I'm divided over a priest appearing there and trying to make his appeal to people who would never get to hear a priest and not condoning their words and actions. I picture Jesus going to parties with plenty of crass, obnoxious folks, but I doubt they said sexual innuendoes in front of Him out of respect.

Angelopeter

I heard Bishop Richard Williamson, quoting PiusIX saying that he does not fear the anti-catholics outside the church, he fears the liberal catholics inside the church. Is it not better for them to be cast into the ocean with a milestone tied around their neck? than to pervert the minds of "these little ones." Or as Christ said " I wish you to be either hot or cold, however since you are lukewarm I will vomit you out!"

Mr. Rich, I know what you mean concerning the akward appearences of priest, or religious on secular television. It requires the patience, piety and solid holiness of the individual to walk a fine line, without bringing shame to the church. Bishop Fulton Sheen was the undisputed model and pioneer for this, and I will be shocked to see another perform the task as he. However the minute a priest substitutes a fraction of Truth and catholic doctrine in order to "convince" the public, they begin to walk a dangerous road, leading others to error and ultimately themselves.

Prayers needed

Another shepherd in need of our prayers-remeber the Master of Lies targets everyone of them constantly knowing if he can bring them down he is wounding us all.

God help this priest and I pray for him. Is it only when you get caught that you say your sorry and ask for forgiveness. Did he not know that he was committing a sin. I think some priests need a Roman Catholic Boot Camp. Semper Fi - The Few - The Faithful - The Priests

He who is free from sin cast the first stone! I believe father Oprah made a human mistake. I personally and strongly believe that the imposition of celibacy on any human being, not only a priest, is completely irrational, inhumane, and unnecessary! Priests should be allowed to have a life partner, a spouse, a wife. I personally believe that a priest would make a most wonderful and ideal husband or life partner. Father Oprah is a very good man and his only sin is to be in love. There is truly nothing to forgive, only to understand. The catholic church should revamp is unrealistic regulations! Could one forbid a human being from urinating or defecating, pardon my directness! But I personally believe that engaging in sexual relations falls under this category: natural human needs! Why should a priest be expected to act or feel differently than any other human being? Why should we impose this unnatural way of being when kindness has nothing to do with natural needs? Father Oprah has changed and impacted many lives in a positive manner. Doesn't that count at all? I find it ridiculous that in this 21st century we are still acting with such ignorance! I am certain that many people around the world share my sentiments and my beliefs. I feel compassion for father Oprah. I only hope and pray that this will bring about some positive and most needed changes within the Catholic Church. It is name for the Catholic Church to reconsider its standing and policies when it comes to celibacy. People should exercise their free will. Priest should be allowed to choose the life style that is natural to them (as long as it does not hurt or destroy or negatively impact other people's lives). They should learn to live and let live!

Father Oprah should be allowed to continue serving God is his own unique way. He is a brilliant man, a good human being, and his mission can be best served by setting an example of virtue by living his life in the way God meant for us all. God created man in his own image. Everything that God created is beautiful and full of pleasure. God created pleasure: food, living, friends, love, the 5 senses, and sex! God meant for man to live a happy life. Everything that God intended for us was meant for man to live a full, productive and happy life. God is a being of love. It us, humans, that have completely distorted God's plans for us. We even dare to make decisions for Him! It is man who has created all these ridiculous interpretations of God's will when there is plenty of evidence to the contrary! God loves all of us and his plan for us, as indicated by nature is to be happy and to love one another. That is the bottom line: Live and Let live!

Liberal catholic(you can not be Catholic if you are against the Catholic Church) exit stage left or come back to the One true Faith not a pick and chose religion.

Trust in Jesus' Promise

Jake the Faith can't die because Jesus promised He would be with us till the end of time and that the gates of hell will never prevail against His Church. People may lose their faith or throw it away but the faith will never die.

Julio,

It's reall hard to take your impassioned plea very seriously. I mean, are you really calling for "free will", when father Oprah had every opportunity to make a choice to become a priest, fireman, or whatever he wanted in the first place? You seem to know a lot about the life challenges/struggles of priests, shouldn't this priest have been as informed about them as you apparently are? I mean, unlike you, I assume he knew perfectly well what a priest was allowed and disallowed, and he apparently was OK with that...at least at the time.

I wonder if you'd have a problem with a different scenario, but using your "compassion model". (Compassion is usually a code word for pretty much allowing anyone to do basically whatever they want.) You see, I got married some years ago, but now I want to play the field...perhaps I want to add a "life partner" on the side. And dang it, I should have the free will to disregard my vows whenever it suits me, right? Vows are freely made, and God vouchsafes them; defile holy orders or the marriage covenant and God is there as judge.

Why are standards viewed by you as being so cruel and unbearable? For 2,000 things seem to have worked pretty well, right?

luvJC

I have never been okay with Priests getting married. I was slightly open to it only because it is acceptable in the Orthodox/Byzantine/Eastern religions that are in line with Rome. I, though, am married to a religion teacher and youth minister. From experience I have learned that Priests should not get married. My husband is constantly gone. He is trying to get to know everyone, socialize, save souls.... engage people...etc. He loves our children and me but he often feels torn especially since his job involves the Church and God. It would be SO HARD for everyone if Priests were to get married. Have a fantastic day. God bless!

Your worst Nightmare (an honest man)

Are any of you listening to yourselves.

For the crime of being in love he will be dismissed and defrocked for having a normal relationship with an adult woman. If he had molested children the church’s first option would be to have allow him to stay in the church and maybe moved to a different position his horrid crimes covered up and never brought to justice.

This is why the mainstream of the world can never take the leadership of the Catholic Church seriously as any sort of moral authority as it is so obviously self serving and hypocritical. The church has allowed molestation and victimization to go on for over a two thousand years and yet it could all be stopped in a day but the church has made the CHOICE to do NOTHING

Until the day the Pope orders the public execution of EVERY molesting priest and the public flogging and excommunication of EVERY priest and bishop who helped cover it up (no mater how high in position) the Catholic Church can be nothing more then an instrument of evil

I now return you to your self-indulgent debate

Sin is our worst nightmare!

No this priest was the opposite of honest If he was honest he would have told his bishop he was experiencing spiritual temptation regarding his vow of celibacy and sought support and help. If after doing this it was realised he might have been mistaken in his vocation he could have sought dispensation from his vows returned to the lay world and then if that was part of God's plan for him fallen in love and married
Instead he has given way to temptation and involved a second party in his sin.
Jesus said Blessed are the pure in heart.Evil enters when any one of us gives way to temptation.
Your comment suggest you want a fundamentalist Islamic resonse to evil
'Until the day the Pope orders the public execution of EVERY molesting priest and the public flogging and excommunication of EVERY priest and bishop who helped cover it up (no mater how high in position) the Catholic Church can be nothing more then an instrument of evil"
Prayer and pennance is the solution suggested by the Blessed Virgin Mary When you have a wonderful mother it is wise to follow her advice and since she is a mother who has known us for those 2000 years or more wiser still to do as she asks Humble reception of the Holy Eucharist at the mass and daily recitation of the rosary including the luminous mysteries are concrete ways to eradicate evil and strenghthen those who are being sorely tempted I will be praying for this young priest.

Bernie

Dear worst nightmare - your name say it all. LIBERAL - For the crime of being in love - what about the crime against God and His Church - The sin of adultery - the sin of scandal - As a Marine and Police Officer I commit a crime and I am no longer a Marine or Police Officer. Forgiveness yes - But he continued this sin when if he did not get caught he would of lived this sin as a Priest. He should of left the Priesthood instead of causing more damage to his soul and others. This is a oath to God not some paper contract. What's more important God or continuing a lustful action with a women as a priest. It is better to pluck your eye's...........

Cristian

Priests have time to prepare for a life of celibacy throughout their years of formation at a seminary. Obviously a priest can be attracted to a woman, but he cannot have any sort of relations, carnal or sentimental. Celibacy is challenging, but a priest can and does live chastely if he prays and does peanance.
On a more practical note, if priests could get married they would not be available 24/7. And let's face it, there are enough slothful priests as it is now, so allowig them to get married would not be the solution.

Your worst Nightmare (an honest man)

@ Sin is our worst nightmare!

Your do nothing attitude is exactly why the molestation has gone on for 2000 years. If a child in the next room cried out in pain inflicted by one of your brothers you would hide in the closet and pray. Pathetic

@ Bernie

You sound like a smart ass punk. I'm more Conservative than any of you. I'm so conservative the few “Christian” friend’s I have known were ashamed to be around me because I lived a more honest and pious life yet have not been in a church in 20 years. And part of that is that I do not and never will stand by when some one is abusing those under there power.

All of you are avoiding the question I pose that most of America wants to know. Again I ask why is there such a reaction from the church for this man to be publicly exposed and defrocked yet the thousands of priest who have molested no raped let us not pretend they raped thousand of children are hidden and protected with full knowledge of the church. When I have friends or family members who have done any thing 1/10 as bad I do my part to see that they are punished to do otherwise would make me a part of the crime.

I dare you all to look in the mirror ask this question. If you don't feel shame you have no humanity

Sin is our worst nightmare!

To "Your worst Nightmare (an honest man) "
Your comment is uncalled for "Your do nothing attitude..." is an unjust slur I can assure you "If a child in the next room cried out in pain..." I would be in that room in a heartbeat to ask what is happening and if I suspected anything untoward I would take the child with me and take futher action. From your comment I am assuming you think I am in a religious institution that is not the case I am a lay person who has had extensive contact with children over many years I am all for immediate action against anyone who harms a child in any way lay or religious. However the point of the original post was whether Father Oprah was being honest-you jumped in because you felt it was a self indulgent and frivolous debate overshadowed by the greater evil of child abuse and I agree it is a greater evil but my point is we need to consider the original source of this evil which lies in individual sin We are actually on the same page I think the only way forward is rigorous exposure and cleaning out of these serious wounds on the Church body via handing over to the police all Church files where criminal behaviour is involved and when others have helped hide and cover up matters like Archbishop Weakland I think they should be compulsorily retired to an austere monastery to do pennance. If they lack sufficent remorse to accept that fate then defrock and let them go out into the world they seemed to prefer without any healthy financial stipend just enough to live on but no more.

Sin is our worst nightmare!

For another spect to this sad business Your worst Nightmare (an honest man)might like to visit [email protected]
This is an awful business and for those who have personally suffered at the hands of wolves in sheep's clothing they know that if these perpretators go to their grave with no real remose or repentance which would involve public admission of their guilt then they will face divine judgment
"Woe to those who scandalise my little ones...."

As a Roman Catholic I am deeply saddened by Father Alberto's decision, I think that he has lied to all those people who believed in him, and supported him. I am a conservative and believe in the celibacy of the priesthood. I compare it to marriage, it's a commitment, a vow that you take, and should be held to the highest of standards. I don't believe that priests could devote themselves fully to their calling while having a family to worry about. They could be mediocre priests that way. In respect to Father Alberto I could have accepted that he fell in Love, he is man before he became a priest and is human and we are all entitled to make mistakes. What I can not accept is that lying and the hiding. why not just come forward and be truthful from the beginning.

Paul

So he became an Episcople minister (and just got "married"). This tells me that he never believed in Transubstanciation (sp). I understand human weakness (although I don't agree with this situation) but it looks like he gave up the True Presence to suit his needs. Am I wrong? Am I missing something here?

Nathaniel

Here's an interesting bit. In a poll, 70% voted that Father Oprah made the right move,30% voted otherwise. This,is,the devils work.

Juliette

Why didn't he leave the Priesthood two years ago after he got involved with the woman? He was not forced to stay. He should have left. But he wanted to have it all. So sneaky and dishonorable.

Bernie

Nightmare: You state that you have not been in church in 20 years but you are pious life then all of your friends. Well, that says it all. You also state that I sound like a smart a** punk, in my career sticks and stone. As a pious sinner (lol) at least I go to Holy Mass. Stop being a baby you are wrong. 2000 years of what? Man will always sin but The One True Church is our salvation. This priest sinned and should of been a real man and leave before he placed a scandal on himself and others. Any priest that hurt (rape) a child is evil - but that is not we were talking about. And if you are not Roman Catholic then go beat up your own faith.

Fabienne

As a French woman living in France, I've heard about Father Oprah through TV news on CNN. I've just read all the comments on this sad event and I'd like to say that, as a Roman Catholic, I've been faced with the same critics towards our Church in France. Men are the same all over the world and we have here less and less faithful priests, and more and more of those who act and think like the Protestant ministers... It is sad to see that a lot of them adopt the rules of other religions, because the latter suit better their needs and human desires. What is worse, the people who want to remain faithful to the Roman Catholic Church are more and more regarded as sectarian. That beats all !
! However, this is all the same quite understandable, when you think that the "Devil" means the "one who divides" ; it sure is his Time ! But, in the end, he will not prevail !
